The vulnerabilities in the Linux kernels are found and patched frequently. I would say it will be better to have updates applied automatically, make sure the ‘unattended-upgrades’ package is installed, then run ‘sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades’. Please note that updates may restart services on your machine, so this may not be appropriate for all environments.

A vulnerability announced by Canonical on July 2nd. ->

People there’s no need to panic. When your OS says that there are security updates, simply install them. It’s not really essential to have automatic updates enabled. unattended-upgrades is primarily meant for production servers(like the webserver hosting InCTF’s portal) or the likes. Just thought I should add this as well. Thanks Giri for sharing this piece of info!

    Android app development

I have been thinking of this for quite sometime, and I guess this is the right time. I have designed a small step by step course to setup and learn android. Srishti was interested in going ahead with it. My plan is to give links here in this thread, and discuss all the specific problems that we face during the development here. I thought it would be a great way for all of us to guide (and little bit misguide :)) each other.

    Hello everyone 🙂
Can someone give me suggestions on how to get  more familiar with the UNIX Shell ?

    • pprahul 6:14 am on April 9, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Hmm.. what is exactly that you are trying to learn?? You want to try out some questions / assignments so that you get more familiar with UNIX shell. One good set of question that I came across : . There are many more online quiz on UNIX shell. The best way to get familiar is to solve problem!! How to get things done using shell.

Oh Oh!! It would be best to follow the build instructions of each projects. Some of them have different ways. Like the gnome has their jhbuild and some other projects depend on the usual make utility.

    Bug Fix in Firefox

    Hey all,

This was my first bug fix.
The bug was to add a new word ‘quinoa’  into Firefox dictionary.

    A few things that I learned :

    1) Building and installing from source
    2) Keeping in contact with the mentor and updating him every 2-3 days.
    3) Creating a patch and asking for review
    4) Updating the tree every time you do new stuffs
    5) Working around multiple bugs that may cause weird patches 🙂
    6) Reading source code
    7) IRC
    8) Proper documentation
    9) Gained an inner strength to go further

Thanks to Vipin sir, Adithya ettan and Arvind ettan who helped me to get started with bug fix.
Also thanks to  ‘SS’ of ‘SSS’  🙂

    Coder Vs Programmer

    • Varrun 9:42 am on March 22, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I can’t stress the importance of writing good code. When good code, I mean writing neat, readable and well designed code. Another important thing is choosing the right data structures and containers for your implementation.

      • pprahul 5:45 am on March 23, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Varrun.. did you follow any basic tutorial / video on how to write well structured program. If you are working for an open source project, you would ofcourse get to know to use, but is there any good videos on this that you have come across ?

    • Varrun 12:37 pm on March 23, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think videos are the best way for this. The best way to garner such skills is to read some classic books on design and by practicing it. Even contributing to open source, does not make your design skills perfect, especially if you are contributing to a well established project. This is because the codebase for most is already established and you do not partake as such in the design of the software. But you do get an idea of what a good design should be like, and if you practice writing most of your everyday code by following such principles it would go a long way. Some examples of great design books are

Ok. That’s actually good. So, next you could prepare a timeline (what you think it will take) and then ask for suggestions from the community. They would have a good idea about whether you will be able to finish it within the time itself.

Revamp this site and increase participation

Here are few updates that some of us are working on. Our aim is to make this site contain all that we are doing. So, to start with we have new menu on the right side with few links. They are basically linking to category based pages. Some posts have been added to each of the category. Now, we need all those who contributed to open source projects to update that news here – so, to say, if Abhishek fixes a bug, then he will make a new “blog post” in amfoss with a title and some description and then add it to “bugs” category & “news” category. If all of you could pls update your status like this we could build up a good database of what we are doing. It would be great to have such a place.. we can show off to our juniors too!!

Can you give the details of the bug that you have fixed?

      • Sowmya Ravidas 7:06 pm on March 8, 2012 Permalink | Reply

It’s a small bug. To add a new word into dictionary.

Previously my mentor told that some modifications required in patch but I was not getting . So I mailed him the entire procedure. And he wrote :

” OK, I figured out the problem. It was actually a bug in merge-dictionaries which caused sort not pick the correct locale for collation, which would mean that the result of sorting would be different on different machines, hence the huge patch. Thanks for your patience and help in finding this issue! I filed this as, and I have landed the fix on mozilla-central. So if you update your tree again and make sure that it contains this patch , you should get the correct diff output.
        Thanks! 🙂 ”

That’s the reason, why it took a lot time.

In the meantime you could work on some of the open source projects to get good at programming, team skills and getting more confident..

    • Arvind 7:05 pm on March 8, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I think it’ll be great if you actually write some code yourself and get into a position where you’re comfortable as a developer and acquainted with software development. As a former intern, I can tell you that internships aren’t really great unless you plan to join the company-nothing much of value is learnt. But hey that’s just my opinion and my intern was among the better ones I’d say. I liked my intern time-it was super fun doing super new and cool stuff but that’s not always the case I guess.

My suggestion-go write your own simple tool. That can help you go a long way. Of course, ultimately you should make up your own mind -we can only offer opinions.

      • vicky 11:29 pm on March 8, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I strongly suggest that you must spend this summer in learning. As Arvind you could equip yourself to become a good developer. Do not be in a hurry as such. If you become a good developer, then you can hope for a dream intern for your S-6 Summer!!:D

    • Arvind 11:36 am on March 9, 2012 Permalink | Reply

However note that intern in a place like IISc or other premier research institutions are of a different nature. Writing code might not be a priority but will help there too IMO. Those intern offers are of a different nature-the work involved is radically different. Hope this helps!
