    Android app development

I have been thinking of this for quite sometime, and I guess this is the right time. I have designed a small step by step course to setup and learn android. Srishti was interested in going ahead with it. My plan is to give links here in this thread, and discuss all the specific problems that we face during the development here. I thought it would be a great way for all of us to guide (and little bit misguide :)) each other.

    Coder Vs Programmer

    • Varrun 9:42 am on March 22, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I can’t stress the importance of writing good code. When good code, I mean writing neat, readable and well designed code. Another important thing is choosing the right data structures and containers for your implementation.

Varrun.. did you follow any basic tutorial / video on how to write well structured program. If you are working for an open source project, you would ofcourse get to know to use, but is there any good videos on this that you have come across ?

    • Varrun 12:37 pm on March 23, 2012 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think videos are the best way for this. The best way to garner such skills is to read some classic books on design and by practicing it. Even contributing to open source, does not make your design skills perfect, especially if you are contributing to a well established project. This is because the codebase for most is already established and you do not partake as such in the design of the software. But you do get an idea of what a good design should be like, and if you practice writing most of your everyday code by following such principles it would go a long way. Some examples of great design books are

    Hey all,

It’s been more than a week since we started and we want all your opinions on how to make this a good place for discussion anything related to foss club.. We want all of you to comment to this post so that we get an idea on what to be done next.. Shall we get in more members, the active ones here ??

    • bithin 8:48 am on March 7, 2012 Permalink | Reply

We should get more people. This will be the best place for them to clear there doubts. Rather than that all the members will know what others members are working on. So, In my opinion we should continue this and take it to new heights.

When shall we show this to Vipin Sir?

          • pprahul 2:59 am on March 13, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Hi @sowmyaravidas.. We need to get more stuff here.. I think.. 🙂 make a new post on the bug that you fixed and put it under the bugs category.. And start off… likewise ask @invinciblepallavi @priyachalakkal and others who have already fixed the bugs to post a new blog post in amfoss, with a small description and then put it under the bugs category. Once that is done, we could show to sir I guess..

            • Sowmya Ravidas 7:11 pm on March 21, 2012 Permalink

sorry Etta, today only I read your reply 🙂 I had put up a new post. Will ask savi and priya also to write.

    • Arvind 11:20 am on March 7, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Yeah I guess we could include more people. Only way to know if it’ll work out amazingly is to have more people join in and analyze results of doing so :).

Yup.. so now we have given access to everyone under the sun to post on this..once we are active we will slowly take back that permission and only allow those who have accounts..

I just now mailed the three girls and sai and shanky..to join in.. till one week let this remain as the Little Master Plan..!!

I forgot to add.. initially at least let’s have 3 post per person per day..!! “Well” with me it’s just a better utilization of the work time here..!!

    • pprahul 9:18 am on March 2, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Till sometime shall I keep this as sticky ?? May be till we get upto 20 members.. all active and going.. ?? And one more thing @all I am hiding the comments thread by default so that the UI is a bit more clean.. do tell me if the other way is better.. what do you feel ??

    • pprahul 9:20 am on March 2, 2012 Permalink | Reply

It is getting too cluttered I feel.. Other than increasing the number of “recent comments”, there is no other way for people to know if someone has updated or not!! What to do ??

      • Arvind 4:28 pm on March 2, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Hiding comments is cool-looks neat too! People can subscribe to a blog and get email updates delivered to inbox. I know cos I’m subscribed to a few blogs.

We could connect the blog to social networks such as FB or twitter too maybe?

Maybe Settings -> Email post changes could help?

        • pprahul 11:07 pm on March 2, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Yup.. looks neat indeed!! Ya..they could actually subscribe and see all the posts and comments.. hmm..But I wouldn’t like to see my inbox filled with 10 comments and 4 posts daily :)..

Hmm..lets try tweaking some of the settings to get better at it… anyways have a great InCTF and then we shall continue..!!
